No One To Blame But Myself

My dog had three puppies. We sold one to a man who wanted a gift for his daughter's seventh birthday, and since I'm a sucker for taking care of the little ones, I let it go for only sixty bucks. We gave one to our grandmother, she just moved into her new place in San Diego, and seeing as how she's eighty-four years old, I'm thinking that she didn't take care of it as well as we would have, and he died a week later.

This morning the third puppy passed away. I'm so heartbroken. Everyone tells me that it was the parvovirus. I'm unsure as to where I should place the blame, on myself for not taking him to the vet when he woke up stiff and weak yesterday... After hand feeding him milk replacement, he seemed okay, walked around, had normal bowel movements and peed everywhere as usual; only to lose his life the next morning.

I'm beating myself up over the possible preventative measures I could have taken to make sure that he was alright. I shouldn't have let him play outside for so long with the other, bigger dogs, I run these scenarios in my head of what I should have done, but it's too late.

May your soul rest in peace.

Forgive me for being such a terrible owner.

That's terrible. I'm so sad that you lost yours. I'm not going to blame you for letting the dogs interact. Parvol is so tricky and unexpected, even if it seems like it's far away, and everyone's 'clean', it can still surprise us. :(

I don't recall any of our puppies ever getting it (we did once have a litter die of birth complications) but my mother was VERY OCD about parvol and puppies, or dogs nearing their 'shots' (vaccine) date. OCD to near psychotic rages, in fact. It was always 'parvol this, parvol that'.

She made everyone wipe their feet at the door, take off their jacket/gloves/hats, and wash hands thoroughly before even being allowed to go near not-yet vaccinated puppies. No way she'd let any dogs go near ours till ours were vaccinated. And then, they had to all go at once. From 5-15 of them in one van. Ugh.

To this day I'm still a bit paranoid and OCD with hand-washing. But damn it, it's a good habit even if 'overdone'. If anyone ever tells me I wash my hands too often, I will reply "it's for the puppies (of the world)." :(

Your puppies, I imagine now are pain-free and happily running about in the heavens. Please don't be too sad. Mistakes happen, and parvol never plays fair.
